What is Left of You

The running shoes you left behind
positioned like you evaporated from them
angled as if deserted mid-step
have me wondering
were you ready
to move on to an unknown life

stuffing skills and memories in a backpack
experiences overflowing from unzipped pockets
your back receding into the distance
I have learned the answer to
Are you ever ready?

  1. Beautiful. Such clear images. I love the vision of the ‘angled running shoes positioned like you evaporated from them’.
I see my son’s shoes haphazardly blocking the front door and it is indeed as if he had evaporated.

  2. Beautifully written as one can tell it’s coming from a mom’s heart. Letting go is hard anyway, but when it comes to your kids it’s the hardest.

  3. Oh Miss Ali, this one wrenched my mother’s heart! Your boy is growing up and leaving home!
It’s bittersweet – you and Adam have raised this fine young man who is spreading his wings to fly away. I’m reminded of the writings of Kahlil Gibran; ‘Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself’. You should be proud of the job you’ve done! Big hugs! Chere

    1. Chere,
Thank you for reflecting back. I am very proud of both my sons and moving through the many levels of letting them go. Thank you for understanding.
