Absent

The sad yellow kitchen towel

knows that you will not be returning.

It sags with grief, folded into itself.

No longer your footsteps

squeak across the floor

to make the house speak.

I sit in your chair to be with you.

  1. When we moved into our current home it was still living a life as the home of the 94 year old lady who lived there. I remember sitting there before we started renovating and feeling like the house missed her. This reminded me of that moment.

  2. Ali, you brought a tear to my eye with your sad yellow kitchen towel, the line ‘It sags with grief, folded into itself’ is so moving. Your poem made me think of van Gogh’s yellow chair.
