Cultivate – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

Shadowed understory no longer needed
sprout through old layers of indecision
boldly bolt toward sunlight to come.

Regardless of broken branches,
depleted soil from years
of growing the same crops.

Angle for full height, extension
of reach, beyond what is
expected of your species.

Grow yourself beyond
the gardens of your past
self.

  1. Oh how I love the illustration and the extended metaphor! Breaking through the past and extending tall, full length, to feel the sun. Beautiful! May we all be the best we can be, stretching to our potential, unhindered by roots dug into tepid or rank soil.

  2. God, Ali. This is an incredible poem. I experienced such courage to reach beyond what is expected, or even our genetics, and extend ourselves into higher consciousness. Cultivating who we truly are and forgiving our past stories that would keep us small or withered. Thank you, thank you for contributing this poem for Forgiving Fridays. I’ll share it in my post either this week or next week! (haven’t worked out which day I’ll do yet.)

Sending you much love. Keep on shinin’ and reaching out for the sun!!
    Love,
    Debbie

      1. I may not comment often but I have been enjoying your work also. There are lines here that I really wish I had written.
