Caremongering – poem by Ali Grimshaw

house to house
neighbor to neighbor
kindness dissemination

this unstoppable virus of care
magical movement spread rampant

the isolated
blanketed with warmth
by open offers, action compassion

waves of encouragement through the window
one errand for survival at a time

an escalation of tenderness

  1. What a great word, Ali – caremongering! I like how you expand on it in your quadrille, the use of repetition to emphasise the spread of that blanket of care and kindness across the neighbourhood and, hopefully, the world. ‘Unstoppable virus of care’ is an excellent oxymoron!

  2. Caremongering! What a delightful word and actions, Ali…on a recent daily walk, I peeked in our local free book cupboard and saw a few foodstuffs left for folks who may be having a hard time…and every evening at 7 pm our neighbourhood erupts in pot banging and clapping for our first responders! I feel invigorated and very relaxed afterwards, it warms my heart to wave at distant neighbours and share words of encouragement with nearer ones.

      1. I just got a message from a friend that we are going to start this in Portland Oregon on Sunday. This is the time for us to all dig down and get creative about new ways to live with compassion. Shine on my friend.

  3. Such a beautiful poem, Ali. Spreading kindness and staying positive in the midst of current situation, which is quite scary, is the best method to keep afloat. I hope all is well with you and your family 😊 Stay safe. Aiva

  4. Ali, thank you for brightening my thoughts considerably. Love the word caremongering. I see this occurring here in my neighborhood – we have all slowed down from our rat-race pace and now pause to wave at one another across the street, texting one another about coping specifics.

    1. Jazz,
Glad to hear you got a lift from my words. That is always my intention. This is a time for creativity to blossom with love. What is helping you to not feel isolated?
I am creating some online writing circles. Let me know if you want to join in.
      Take care. Ali
