"Without poetry, we lose our way." - Joy Harjo
the future of my day is coming from
where yours has already taken a seat
while I wake, you are closing the book
to rest your head in a country covered by stars
Here on this pondering path of forest
synchronized with the slow passing of light
this fern comnunity reaches toward many
more than any one person can see
and one of them is me
a gathering of condolences for this
time of separation, green fronds reach
to surround me in a forest embrace
our fiddlehead hearts,
together while apart
your voice sits with me, uncurling
I am moss damp with missing you

The fronds are still to unfurl in my part of the world… but I feel that I can connect with your part… and I will think about this when I start to see the fronds in my garden.

Thank you for the wander in the woods, Ali, and for those wonderful fiddlehead ferns! Although this is a personal poem, I really felt the opening lines this morning, which are now reversed, I’ve just woken and ‘you are closing the book / to rest your head in a country covered by stars’. I like to think of the international poets’ community as green fronds that surround us in a forest embrace.

Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t realize that I could watch it. I have never heard myself reading one of my poems on a recording. I am a bit nervous but it will be interesting. It is so wonderful to hear the voices of many blogging poets I follow.
Thanks for making me feel a part of the community.

I am please that the love and longing came through in my words. Sometimes it takes a long time to find the right combination.

I am discovering in writing we learn about who and what we are are. For me it is a therapy. A word or a conversation and I work at how this changes me. I can get so fixated, obsessed by one thing. Writing seems to drive through this, providing another angle, view point. It is like breathing and sitting and going with the experience.

Wonderful. I hear what you are saying about writing providing a way to see ourselves. I too have found it a powerful tool for self reflection.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Keep sharing your poems.

Helen,
I wrote this poem for my best friend who lives in Ethiopia, on the other side of the globe. I hope it will resonate with any and all who are physically separate while their hearts remain connected.
Thanks for letting me know my words reached you today. Take care.
