~ Ali Grimshaw 
you believe that saying the right thing
will dissolve the pain, that you should
know how to ascend the sunken

afloat in powerlessness without
the words to reach the aggrieved
restore their hearts to harmony

don’t be swallowed by your lacking
the right words never have been
what the grieving seek

sufficient is whole face listening
eyes intent to bridge being
ears strong enough to hear
without changing the subject

and you can do that
anyone can
make that choice

  5. This is a brave thing to write and address, Ali. Grieving is such a personal process, something unique to the individual. Some take a few months to grieve, others can take years – and each of us deal with grief in different ways. I like your message at the end there on supporting those who are grieving. Listening without interruption seems like the best approach and to show that you care. Great work with this poem. Hope you are doing well.

      Great to hear from you. Grieving is a personal journey. The heart needs what the heart needs to heal.
      In addition, it makes me wonder about how different cultures and religions provide support for someone in the process of grieving. I am curious and want to learn from others.

      1. I think grieving is different for different cultures. As far as I’m aware, talking about grieving or a loss openly is not common whereas its more common in Western cultures.
