Circle of Writing – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

“Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.” – Audre Lorde

Come write, throw your words
on the wall like paint.
Splattering in playful revealing.

See which ones stick.
Watch which ones fall
or slide down the wall.

Your words want out
to frollick in the sun
to show you hope lives on.

Holding our words with listening
care, teasured gently in open hands
we hear their song

see them as foreground
aglow in luscious hues
where you will sit in their light.

  1. What a wonderful poem, Ali 🤗 poetry is good for the soul, whether in relation to readers or the poets themselves. Poetry gives rhythm to silence and light to darkness 🥰 thanks for sharing and have a good day ☺️ I hope all is well ☺️ Aiva xx

  2. Audre Lourde’s quote and your thoughts precisely share what writers of poetry do. “a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.” especially highlights what good can come from opening up and pouring out what we have to say. Thanks, Ali. I enjoyed both very much. 🙂

    1. Susi,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your thoughts. Considering you are a poet as well, I’m glad to hear this resonated. I truly love the practice of holding space for others to find their words.

  3. Ali, as a writer your poem spoke straight to my heart and feelings about the craft! May our words always ‘frollick in the sun’! We must never forget the joy of playing with our writing, giving the childish being within us a free rein to just create … and see the magic that emerges!

  4. Really enjoyed this poem, Ali. Great poetry from you. I felt it describes what us writers go through, we write and then see which words stick and fall, what stories stay and what stories need to remain untold for now. And the stories that get told now, they shine in their well-deserved glory. Hope you are doing well ❤

    1. Mabel,
Thank you for this reflection. I hear you connecting your writing process with this poem. How amazing that we can connect as writers from such a huge distance away! I appreciate hearing from you.
      Take good care,
      Ali

  5. Thank you for sharing your words and for encouraging so many writers to have their voices heard on your wonderful “Writing Circle” meetings .. I’ll be posting this one soon …

    “Logically, I Am Here”

    Nonsense and logic
    What is the difference?
    In our world today

    A forest breeze
    Caresses my senses
    Like flowering gum-trees
    Free up my defenses

    I love nonsense
    Is it my best sense?
    My most creative sense
Is it my good mood sense?
    Free of commonsense
    And government expense
