Sometimes the light turns red before we have left the intersection leaving our tail end vulnerable sometimes our brakes don’t work, spinning on black ice with blurred windows of reaction sometimes we must go slowly, inching through the fog in faith blinded by dense thoughts sometimes breakdowns leave us on the rainy roadside unpacking resourcefulness sometimes forgiveness shows up like an invitation an off-ramp never seen before sometimes we just need to stay on the road grip and steer This was written in 2019 and still resonates with me today. This driving metaphor definitely places me in a car-centered culture. Each of us is navigating our way through the day. Be kind and assume the best intentions of others.

I took this photo in Lisbon, Spain. Such a fun curve in the street.
Posted on The Drabble in 2022. You can find some great short poems on this site.
I especially love the stanza about forgiveness.

…grip & steer… Thats all there ever is, regardless of which road you’re on or who’s driving, ain’t it? Up here, in dirt road country it’s like that almost all year long.
Nice work, Ali,

Such a wonderful poem and a fantastic photo, Ali. Having been to Lisbon four times, I can say that the Portuguese capital has some of the most beautiful streets in the world. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Beautiful, Ali. Love all the wise reminders in your poem. Especially:
“sometimes
breakdowns leave us on the rainy roadside
unpacking resourcefulness”
And your note at the end resonates with me, I couldn’t agree more – “Be kind and assume the best intentions of others.” 👌🏼

Sometimes we wonder why we feel stationary while the world is spinning around us …
Sometimes and Other Times
sometimes my mind feels as big as the ocean
other times my mind is a grain of sand on the beach
sometimes I wonder how vast this universe is
other times, I am an empty suitcase
sometimes I feel my star is reaching out for me
other times I am a fish swimming alone in the sea
sometimes I hear the humming of birds and bees
other times I am deaf to the hallowed sounds of dying trees
Sometimes I see the dark side of the moon after midnight
other times I am blind to the world’s unnatural blights
sometimes I am asleep, and all I ever do is have silly dreams
other times I am awake, and only care about strawberries and cream

Ali, in dream work, vehicles are always examined closely, and your dream meshes with that type of awareness. I love how it looks like part of the building has been cut away (or was built) to accommodate the curve. You’re right, that’s one hella cool curve 🙂
