When something ends
the road behind washed away
the tightrope cut
the plane in flight
before forward lights have appeared
illuminating the next.

When something ends
what is the point in cramming your feet
into the shoes of the past?
Unless you want to walk in pain.

When something ends
after the sobbing,
and grief has dried up.

That’s when you know,
that’s when you finally know
the word
for the first time.

  1. Hi
    I really enjoyed reading this.
It made alot of sense.Understanding why we do what we do is never easy for those who constantly want everything to go back to the way things were.
The times when there life seemed so much better.
To move forward without pain is not an easy process, however move on we must. This poetry is so good at expeessing this.
    Thankyou for posting this blog

  2. Hi
    Thankyou for sharing this post.
It is very true that many clinging onto the past.If truth be known most people are creatures of habit and to move forward we need to break these old dibilitating habits and discover new experiences in order to free us from misery and self pity.

  3. I like the analogy of the “cramming your feet into the shoes of the past”. Such a perfect comparison, really. Our experiences, even the worst ones change us forever. Time for a “new pair of shoes”, a new perspective, a new start. I really enjoyed your insightful poem, Ali.

    1. Laurie, I am honored to hear you say that. I didn’t know you were an educator. Thank you for your 30 years of service. And thank you for letting me know that I captured the experience for you. It’s always satisfying to know that I have connected with someone else’s life.
