Purgation – Poem By Ali Grimshaw

“Poetry offers the world something that’s small enough to carry close to your heart, and big enough to carry all of the ordinary things that can be encompassed in any one day.” — Pádraig Ó Tuama

Purgation

shame sweeping
disinfecting disappointment
vacuuming deeply the corners
of deliberately lost memories

I open one eye, hesitant
to take a look
then squint until
rooted in my intention

It's possible there is
no monster of madness
in the closed cupboard of the past
just dust bunnies multiplying

and the purgation continues.

  1. I had to look up purgation. Thanks for another thoughtful poem. I like your friend’s lighthouse poem very much too. Mom

  2. “the closed cupboard of the past,” is such a wonderfully in depth assessment. I agree, in order to begin the purgation we must learn to let go.

      1. Yeah, maybe monster of madness or closed cupboard would ring more with readers….just my two cents, though. It’s evening here, so I’m in for a chamomile tea and a good chapter before to bed soon. Best!

  3. It is difficult to take a look into ‘the closed cupboard of the past’ – that’s such a great metaphor because it sums up how difficult that can be. But in order to begin healing, we have to do it, a little bit at a time.
