Silky Owlet / Photographed in Papua New Guinea / Michael Sammut
She is different from me
yet we share a desire of forests
deeply shadowed with a hundred greens.
What do her eyes see?
I think she is teaching me how to land
make steady a fragile footing
from leaf to leaf
beautifully balanced
and I am captivated.

“I think she is teaching me how to land” …. Nature does teach us in just such a way. Like Kim, I love the title too. Simply a lovely poem, Ali.

Ali, I love how you approach the butterfly, as a teacher. In Jamie Sams’ book, she calls them “creature teachers.” I also love “a hundred greens,” which describes a plot of forest perfectly.

I’m glad to hear you found connection in this poem. I never tire of all the different greens.

Beautiful, Ali. Nature is an excellent teacher but oft we don’t have time to heed.

I love the title, Ali, I know what you mean, we need to stop and observe nature more, and the opening stanza especially, the ‘desire of forests deeply shadowed with a hundred greens’.
