Why Do You Ask?

Some questions create a vortex

sucking all of the air out of the room.

Others can make time expand,

the air still.

Leaving us wondering

how the question ever got delivered.

A question can catch on fire.

Crackling and sizzling, until it is received.

Sometimes it leaves a burn.

My favorite question is soft.

Words unhurriedly floating,

unsure who they are meant for,

looking for an ear to land on.

What is Safety?

Minute long hugs,

independent living,

seat belts,

non-toxic cleaners,

lifelong promises,

vitamins,

holding your tongue,

clean water,

freedom of speech,

being sheltered,

money in the bank,

airport security,

homeowners insurance,

a gun,

love?

Just Because

You belong.
In fact you are needed.
Not to do or solve problems.
Not to wash socks.
Not to quiet the arguments.
Not even to heal the hurts.
You are irreplaceable.
Needed just as yourself.
The exact way you are
and the exact way you are not.
in this moment.
And in this moment.
And in this moment.

Flashlight batteries

Darkness will arrive.  It always catches by surprise.  The last thing you thought would happen. Standing now between walls unseen. You can only feel your way. Bearings gone. Hearing your breath, wondering how long it has been since you just stood still. A moment of relief before the thinking returns. Holding the flashlight tight, you hope it will light your way. When was the last time the batteries were checked? One of the hundreds of tasks put into the someday pile.
