Experiments in growing – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

wanting full sun while full well knowing I am a shade plant

as hours of sunlight in our landscape keep shifting

seeing us wilting

I am willing to consider transplanting

while irrigating with honesty

wondering weeds away

trusting rainclouds and the pollination between us

  1. Nice writing, Ali. Growing is a bit like that – not easy, and sometimes we have to try something different in order to change and grow in to our potential. Plants so readily adapt to the seasons and weather, a sign of courage and ready to face what’s to come. Beautiful image of the farm. Hope you are doing well 😊

  2. Living in a townhome leaves me gardenless …. pots on decks create possibilities which I do take advantage of. I love your lines “irrigating with honesty, wondering weeds away” …. however you reignited my yearning for a garden.

    1. Helen, I love the metaphors that come from being a gardener. For me it is and ongoing willingness to find joy in what thrives and accept what doesn’t. All you need is one pot and one plant to play the game. I hope you do.

  4. I love your experiments in growing, Ali, and the opening line resonates with me, being a shade plant myself. My favourite lines:

‘I am willing to consider transplantingwhile irrigating with honestywondering weeds away’.
