May you notice – poem by Ali Grimshaw

enlight1

It doesn’t need

to be earned

fought for, proven.

It cannot be purchased

or owed.

True love is given

just because.

I hope that you notice

that love has landed on you today.

I hope you let yourself feel it.

Coddiwomple – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

Even without
a roadmap
I can follow
the song
of my
heart’s direction.
Sing along
while keen
to its increase.
Turning
in time
so as not to
lose the melody.
Ears intent on
wholeness of being
following
fulfilling
fondly
easing my ache
of confusion.

Unravel – reflective writing workshops

It is a continual process to unweave
that which is truth from story. I pull

a thread, remove one line, observe how
the fabric changes, notice the new spaces

breathing between essential threads
that remain, a skeleton of existence

until extracting the unneeded
leaves what is left, sparsely resilient

penetrable light of a future once blocked
by memories tightly woven.

Choose a small cup

simple, without handle

each hand deserves a curve of warm

the offering of this today, inhabited

it cannot help but overflow

effortlessly overcome boundaries

designed by small needs

running down the sides in abundance.

Maybe you have forgotten

how little it takes

to satisfy thirst.

Traveler

img_1761-1.jpg

Your silhouetted resilience

of an almost ageless traveler

with kid’s eyes of curious.

Ready for all that is,

wildly wondrous.

Unwilling to miss a viewpoint

be it window wide

or mountaintop.

Fractured city lights illuminate

all the bold and beloved

I see in you.

One bowl – poem by Ali Grimshaw

And the words were ladled out
to fill her, like warm soup
for a bleak benumbed soul in need

she had forgotten to feed her
spirit, an inner child who waited
patient for her spoonful

another day here was possible

Smoke Signals

img_6903

I woke to the burning,

smoked letters across wide sky
that only we could decode.

The weight of getting it right,

to know their secrets, before pierced sunlight
deemed them unreadable.

I, just one of many, leaders as mountains
whose waters are running dry.

Heads bare, exposed to weather’s ruling.

earth cracking realization
shake and bake reformation
voice regained

shift and tumbled truths
revealed by backward binoculars
their sight once trusted for even footing

do not be surprised by my song
or the way I harness cumulonimbus clouds

I am no longer
that girl.

I am doing cartwheels over the reality that I am a part of this new anthology. What an honor to be included alongside so many amazing poets. A huge thank you to Brian Geiger at Vita Brevis Press for his vision and hard work to make this a reality.

your tomorrows

img_1274

as you climb into the driver’s seat of 2020

what will you unhitch, leave behind
no longer pull the weight of?

will you remove your hat, let your hair freely flow
release control for what stays

or goes out the windows

to fly outside and down the road like confetti
jumbled stories of your past caught in roadside trees

will you make a u turn at the fork in the road
or pull over to share your empty passenger seat?

dVerse Open Link Night

I found this poem, A House Called Tomorrow, to be an inspiration for the new year. May it inspire you to stand up for what you believe and take action to give what only you can give.

A House Called Tomorrow

You are not fifteen, or twelve, or seventeen—
You are a hundred wild centuries

And fifteen, bringing with you
In every breath and in every step

Everyone who has come before you,
All the yous that you have been,

The mothers of your mother,
The fathers of your father.

If someone in your family tree was trouble,
A hundred were not:

The bad do not win—not finally,
No matter how loud they are.

We simply would not be here
If that were so.

You are made, fundamentally, from the good.
With this knowledge, you never march alone.

You are the breaking news of the century.
You are the good who has come forward

Through it all, even if so many days
Feel otherwise.  But think:

When you as a child learned to speak,
It’s not that you didn’t know words—

It’s that, from the centuries, you knew so many,
And it’s hard to choose the words that will be your own.

From those centuries we human beings bring with us
The simple solutions and songs,

The river bridges and star charts and song harmonies
All in service to a simple idea:

That we can make a house called tomorrow.
What we bring, finally, into the new day, every day,

Is ourselves.  And that’s all we need
To start.  That’s everything we require to keep going.

Look back only for as long as you must,
Then go forward into the history you will make.

Be good, then better.  Write books.  Cure disease.
Make us proud.  Make yourself proud.

And those who came before you?  When you hear thunder,
Hear it as their applause.
