Thank you School of Blue

There are moments when
what someone else has inked onto the page
stops time for you

when another's words absorb through your skin
settling deep in your belly
like a surprising crumb of nourishment
you didn't know you needed.

A small taste of harmony,
blooming on your tongue.

It opens a realizing that wasn't there before
a long lasting hunger,

you nibble through a second read
then a third,
taking your time to swallow it all.

Remembering a desire for flavors
that had been forgotten

how good a poem could taste.

My poem is a response of gratitude for a poem I read today called Ice Cube on School of Blue
Read the poem HERE. Thank you, Rick Frame, for the nourishment.

My photo was taken near Amsterdam. A lovely, crisp morning of reflection where the sky and the water gave back to each other.

Liberated Words – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

ink them down
scribble quickly
draw from your cuts
fly down this line and the next
scrawl the clouds of confusion
let them outside of
your inside
release the liquid of life
swiftly, before you
overthink

then blow them all away
like dandelion seeds

Purgation – Poem By Ali Grimshaw

“Poetry offers the world something that’s small enough to carry close to your heart, and big enough to carry all of the ordinary things that can be encompassed in any one day.” — Pádraig Ó Tuama

Purgation

shame sweeping
disinfecting disappointment
vacuuming deeply the corners
of deliberately lost memories

I open one eye, hesitant
to take a look
then squint until
rooted in my intention

It's possible there is
no monster of madness
in the closed cupboard of the past
just dust bunnies multiplying

and the purgation continues.

Poems from the Circle – Lighthouse Keeping

I spent some time with Ali Grimshaw’s writing circle and once again, enjoyed being with like minded souls as we explored poetry together. The inspiration for my poem came from, “Lighthouse Keeping” by Kay Ryan. – Val

Lighthouse Keeping By Val Boyko
Find Your Middle Ground

Know that we are
keepers of the light

Holding space and
reaching out to those
in darkened places.

Its not our job
to judge, advise, fix
or rescue others.

Our calling is to keep
the light shining
within ourselves and

bring it to the world,
to keep us all afloat.

Thank you Val for sharing this inspirational poem and for all the loving support written on your blog, Find Your Middle Ground. You are a bright light in the world. Keep on shining. I will be reading in appreciation.

The Gift – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

He bought it used. It was heavy and solid like home. Soon he began to peel the layers away. It was painted antique green and underneath she remembered a layer of white, then bright orange. She was not sure what the the other colors were but it had been coated and recoated by many who had different preferences. He spent hours cleaning away paint brushed into the crevices and cracks. It was a labor of care to reach the wood grain underneath all of those years. She watched him work off and on knowing he would continue. He told her it would be hers but her doubt piled up with the days. Through the sanding and peeling of hours of evenings. It was taking a long time, so much time and more than he realized it would. After all of that scraping away to bring the beauty to light, she knew that it couldn’t be passed to another, even a daughter that he loved. It wouldn’t be hers now. Not because it was an antique piano, but because of the time it took him to bring it back to life. When he said, “Yes, of course it is yours.” She was surprised by the love of those hours. It remains with her today.

500th – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

"The decision we face is not to chart the perfect way forward; it is simply to embark on a journey. Once we’ve taken a step forward, the work will teach us where to take a second step, and then a third, and so on. Purpose does not reveal itself to those sitting safely at the starting block. In other words, you don’t plan your way into finding your purpose. You live into it.”
- Jacqueline Novogratz

500th

I guess I can't call it an accident
it's time to admit, intentionality.
Claiming my inner poet five years ago
(a birthday gift to myself) has led to this
my 500th post. I would have given up
sharing, long ago, if it hadn't been for you
you reading, then reflecting back
your thoughts in return.

Knowing the aloneness of darkness
I started with the desire
to reach just one
share my flashlight
sit beside and just listen
and listen some more.

These years have brought your voices
on the breeze, across seas,
stanzas have sailed, flown
and walked themselves
beyond boundaries,
I have heard your hearts.

Together we are rewriting
a world through poetry.

Thank you for being a part of my journey.
I am here to serve you in yours.

I would love to write with you and hold space for your words.

When heaviness becomes an unwanted roommate

“It’s not the weight you carry
but how you carry it –
books, bricks, grief –
it’s all in the way
you embrace it, balance it, carry it
–from Mary Oliver, “Heavy”
untold stories swallowed whole
like stones in your belly
can fly when spoken

 alight on trusted shoulders
 go reside elsewhere

 write your untold narratives
 scribble pain into delicate beauty

 burn those
 you are finished reading
 ignite just enough heat

 vitality is drawn to warmth

Let’s Get Lost in a Poem – Ali Grimshaw

Poetry is truth in a universal language able to cross boundaries and reach the human heart. It is through our practice of listening deeply to poems, to ourselves and each other that the joy of connection is created within the writing circle. I am honored to hold space for your words and invite you to welcome them to the page. Let's get lost together as we write and reflect. Join me for an upcoming writing circle. Fill your heart.

Let's get lost
in beauty of the waves.
Put the needle on the record
of this day,
live simply so others may
simply live
to delight in all good things
wild and free.

Unfolding Love – Poem by Ali Grimshaw

By knowing you,
I see myself in bloom
now and 90 years wrinkled.
My doubts don’t exist in your eyes.
You see the chipped edges
scars of failed attempts
places worn raw
as my earned beauty.
You hold the rough
abeyant curves of my puzzle
like a treasure.
You saw my essence of spirit
gently holding it all up,
a mirror before me,
until I could see,
for myself,
who I am becoming.
